Owning a scooter is excellent fun; particularly when the weather is behaving itself. It is also great for saving a bit of money of course which, as the price of gasoline continues to rise, is likely to be an increasing concern for many. With so many types available however, it can be confusing to select the best one.

Over and above anything else, it is important to set a budget. However, if this is not a huge concern, it is possible to really go the whole hog and splash around ten thousand dollars if you wish. For such money, something with an engine size of about 600cc would be yours, whilst the bells and whistles added on will be quite impressive too.

However, for the majority of people, smaller types at little more than 2,000 dollars prove more than capable for basic running around, and heading into the office each day. You can spend less than this of course through second hand machines or via online auction sites.

Having decided upon your budget, it will be necessary to make a note of your needs. Occasionally of course, this may mean you price yourself out of certain models that you had in mind. If this is the case, consider whether you can increase your budget slightly or be prepared to compromise.

This is most likely to be driven by how you intend on using the scooter. For heavy use, perhaps as the main mode of transport, something with a larger engine and greater comfort should be sought. However, if you are using just to scoot to the shops or to work and back in a busy metropolis, you can afford to aim slightly lower perhaps.

Another thing to consider regards the engine size is local laws. Check what the smallest engine size/maximum speed allowed to ride on the roads you'll be using is, and work this into your thought process. A 50cc engine should be capable of 45mph, whilst anything over 200cc will reach 65mph and beyond.

To make your ride experience even better, look out for helpful additions. Particularly for first timers, electronic starters make things easier; certainly on those crisp and clear Fall mornings. Auto transmissions too are good to look out for, and take something else to think about out of the way.

There are some concerns that practicality is not the best. However, this is somewhat of a misconception considering that many types have under seat storage and side bags again, for not too much additional cost.

Once all the essential decisions have been made, you will be able to really have a bit of fun. Some modern types look a little too functional, and people really enjoy the retro styled Italian scooters; from Vespa and Lambretta, but Honda and Yamaha produce sleek and stylish looking models too.

Whatever your decision, when first out on the open road on your scooter it is paramount to be vigilant of what is going on around you; you take up a lot less space than most other road users of course. You should also be mindful about driving in inclement weather conditions too, where it may be best to leave it at home.
